Budgeting that survives real life

Build a zero-based budget, split essentials from cuttable spending, and free up a fixed monthly amount for your goal.

1. List every dollar coming in

Write down take-home pay from every source: paychecks, side income, benefits, support. Use what actually lands in your account, not gross pay. If income varies, use your lowest month from the last six.

2. List every dollar going out

Pull 60–90 days of bank and card statements. Group each charge into a category: housing, utilities, food, transport, insurance, debt minimums, subscriptions, personal, giving, and everything else.

3. Split essentials from cuttable

  • Essentials: housing, utilities, basic groceries, transport to work, insurance, minimum payments.
  • Cuttable: dining out, subscriptions, upgrades, impulse shopping, premium versions of essentials.
  • Mark each cuttable line with the dollar amount you could free up this month.

4. Give every dollar a job (zero-based)

Income minus all assigned spending should equal $0. Anything left over is assigned to: a starter emergency buffer ($500–$1,000), sinking funds for irregular costs (car repairs, gifts, annual bills), and extra debt payments.

5. Protect the plan

  • Automate bills and the extra debt payment the day after payday.
  • Hold a 30-minute money review every week — same day, same time.
  • Keep a small guilt-free spending line so the budget lasts.
  • Save your numbers in the Budget & time planner.
