How to become debt free: a step-by-step plan

A practical roadmap to becoming debt free — set a goal, build a budget, choose a payoff method, grow income and stay out of debt for good.

1. Set a debt-free date

Add up every balance, then pick a realistic target date. Write down why it matters — a home, retirement, less stress. A clear goal keeps you going when progress feels slow.

2. Build a starter emergency fund

Save $500–$1,000 first so a flat tire doesn't go back on a credit card. Then put everything extra toward debt.

3. Budget and cut

Use a zero-based budget to find money for debt every month. See the budgeting guide for the full method.

4. Pick a payoff method

Avalanche (highest interest first) saves the most money; snowball (smallest balance first) builds momentum. See the debt payoff guide to choose and to roll payments forward.

5. Increase income

Even $300 a month of extra income can cut years off a payoff plan. See the income streams guide for ideas you can start this week.

6. Stay debt free

  • Keep cards paid in full and utilization under 10%.
  • Grow your emergency fund to 3–6 months of expenses.
  • Use sinking funds for big expenses you can predict.
  • Keep a weekly money review habit.
